In a decisive move to combat the growing concern over theft of medical commodities and equipment, Madam Jatu Abdulai, Managing Director of the National Medical Supply Agency (NMSA), has declared a firm zero-tolerance policy on drug pilferage, theft, and mismanagement.

She made this statement while addressing the press on Thursday, 19th March 2026, regarding the ongoing investigation into the disappearance of eighteen (18) portable ultrasound machines.

The incident has raised serious concerns about its potential impact on healthcare delivery across the country, particularly access to critical diagnostic services in health facilities.

Madam Abdulai emphasized that the matter is being treated with utmost urgency due to its implications for patient care. She disclosed that the Agency is working closely with the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to ensure a thorough investigation. According to her, all staff involved in the supply and distribution chain during the period under review have been made available to assist with the process.

“The Agency is fully cooperating with the ACC to ensure a comprehensive, transparent, and credible investigation,” she stated.

Reaffirming the Agency’s position, Madam Abdulai stressed that NMSA maintains a zero-tolerance stance on corruption, theft, and mismanagement of medical supplies. She warned that any individual found culpable would face the full force of the law, noting that such actions not only erode public trust but also undermine the delivery of essential healthcare services.

In response to the incident, the Agency has outlined several corrective measures aimed at preventing future occurrences. These include strengthening internal control systems, enhancing security at the central warehouse and district distribution points, and deepening collaboration with the ACC to address systemic gaps.

Additionally, NMSA is working with the Ministry of Health to roll out a nationwide campaign against drug and medical supply pilferage.

Madam Abdulai assured the public that every effort is being made to recover the missing ultrasound machines and ensure accountability.

“Our priority is to ensure that these life-saving machines reach the health facilities and communities for which they were intended,” she stressed.

She further reiterated that management would continue to enforce its zero-tolerance policy against corruption, theft, and any form of mismanagement. “Such actions not only undermine public trust but also compromise the delivery of essential healthcare services to the people of Sierra Leone,” she added.

Madam Abdulai concluded by reaffirming the Agency’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and the effective nationwide delivery of safe and essential medical supplies.
