President Julius Maada Bio has disclosed that under his administration in Office his Government has fulfilled its pledge to create a national Sports fund that will be administered for the benefit of Sports development in the Country.

President Julius Maada Bio made this statement during the State Opening of the Fifth Republic of his last of his first term in office. He noted that for many youngsters, Sports have been the difference between a life of despair and Crime, and one filled with purpose and productivity. For many, it has been the difference between giving in to peers’ pressure and drug use, and living in a healthy, population is surely one that is on its way to prosperity. He said I have humbly encouraged you all, every Sierra Leonean, Honorable members of Parliament, and Friends of this great nation to support the basket fund.

The President said for him administration of Sports is not mere play, but recognized its role in improving social and community health and productivity, enhancing social cohesion, and engendering such useful qualities as teamwork,   unity, discipline, and determination. This is in addition to sports development as an integral part of the national economic strategic planning.

He affirmed that under his administration the country returned to the Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon after 25 years of hiatus in the increasingly popular and profitable Sierra Leone. He noted that the Sierra Leone Premier League is showcasing an exceptional home base of footballing talents and the country’s regional success in boxing, Swimming, his Government can safely calm that it has restored an era of Sporting excellence once more in Sierra Leone.

He further that this has created (1500) direct Jobs and several thousand football-related Jobs have been created by the Premier League and more Football infrastructure has been built by the Government and private sector in which Kenema City can now boast of an all-Weather playing surface.
