In a resounding display of confidence and optimism, members of the Sixth Parliament of the Second Republic of Sierra Leone have graciously welcomed the newly elected Speaker, Hon. Segepoh Solomon Thomas, and Deputy Speaker, Hon. Ibrahim Tawa Conteh. The parliamentary session on Tuesday, the 7th of May 2024, was marked by expressions of felicitation and hope for the future of the parliament under its new leadership.

Hon. Alpha Jalloh, representing the All People’s Congress Party, offered prayers for the continued blessings of Allah/God upon the Speaker and Deputy Speaker. Describing them as youthful leaders with the charisma to navigate the challenges of the Sixth Parliament, Jalloh emphasized the importance of their independent supervision in the enactment of laws and agreements.

Echoing similar sentiments, Hon. Mohamed Fofanah of the Sierra Leone People’s Party praised the meritorious victory of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker in the recent elections. Fofanah highlighted the significance of their youthfulness and urged them to leverage their positions to foster better prospects for young Members of Parliament.

Hon. Veronica Kadie Sesay, a member of the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party, expressed elation over the election results and envisioned a future where women would hold the Speakership position. She urged female parliamentarians to remain committed to their duties, expressing confidence in the leadership abilities of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker.

However, not all remarks were solely congratulatory. Hon. Abdul Karim Sesay raised questions regarding the effectiveness of young people in previous administrations and called for fairness and transparency in the service of the Sixth Parliament. He emphasized the public’s anticipation for the thorough scrutiny of the Audit Report.

In response to the discussions, Hon. Alpha Barrie emphasized the importance of upholding the rule of law and promoting democracy in the Sixth Parliament. He urged the Speaker and Deputy Speaker to lead with integrity and fairness.

Acting opposition leader, Hon. Aaron Koroma, acknowledged the amendment allowing serving members of parliament to contest for the Speakership, noting the expectations placed on the newly elected Speaker. He emphasized the need for collaboration between the government and opposition members, asserting the opposition’s commitment to the government’s agenda.

Acting Leader of the ruling party, Hon. Bashiru Silikie, urged the Speaker and Deputy Speaker to seize the opportunity to create avenues for youth empowerment. He warned of potential backlash if they fail to uphold the interests of parliamentarians.

In his statement, Acting Speaker Hon. Ibrahim Tawa Conteh expressed determination to introduce organizational reforms and restore order to the parliament.

The session concluded with expressions of gratitude from the newly elected Speaker, Hon. Segepoh Solomon Thomas, who thanked the Members of Parliament for their confidence and pledged to serve with integrity and diligence.
