Inmates at the Moyamba Correctional Centre in the Southern Region have embarked on food production in fulfillment of President Julius Maada Bio manifesto to accelerate food self-sufficiency in the country.

Speaking to this medium, the Media and Public Relations Officer of the Sierra Leone Correctional Service in the Southern Region, Victor Wilson said that the inmates are embarking on agriculture in order to compliment the effort of President Bio’s vision to fight against hunger in the country.

He said that the inmates running their jail terms at the Moyamba Correctional Centre stand to benefit from food production, pointing out that 10% of the agricultural proceeds will be allocated to them, of which 5% will be banked to given to them upon their release from prison.

This he said will help them start their lives by taking good care of themselves in their various communities, adding that the Moyamba Correctional Centre is the first to undertake such huge cassava farming.

According to Mr. Wilson, “we are responding to the President’s clarion call for every government institution to embark on farming.” He noted that Moyamba Correctional Centre is taking the lead.

Mr. Wilson said the farming initiative came from the Officer Commanding the Moyamba Correctional Centre and the inmates are providing the labor, which he said, is a good idea and called on other institutions to emulate the initiative at the Moyamba Correctional centre.
