In a heartfelt end-of-service ceremony held on August 28, 2025, the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development (MOPED) honored 11 ECOWAS volunteers who have completed three years of service in Sierra Leone.

The emotional event was graced by the Minister of Planning and Economic Development, Kenyeh Barlay, and the Deputy Minister, Rev. Dr. Jonathan Titus-Williams. The volunteers were recognized for their exceptional contributions across key sectors, including health, education, public administration, and monitoring and evaluation (M&E).

In her remarks, Minister Barlay expressed deep appreciation for the volunteers’ unwavering dedication and impactful work. “Your dedication has not only strengthened the sectors you served in but also contributed significantly to our national development efforts,” she said.

Over the past three years, the ECOWAS volunteers have played a vital role in implementing development programs aimed at addressing critical challenges in Sierra Leone. Their efforts have improved access to healthcare and education, supported local governance structures, and encouraged collaboration and knowledge exchange between Sierra Leone and other ECOWAS member states.

Deputy Minister Rev. Dr. Titus-Williams also commended the volunteers for their invaluable contributions. He emphasized the importance of regional cooperation in achieving sustainable development goals, stating, “Your efforts have set a powerful example of solidarity and commitment to the growth of Sierra Leone.”

As the ceremony concluded, both ministers urged the volunteers to take the experiences and lessons gained in Sierra Leone back to their home countries, thereby strengthening the bonds of friendship and regional collaboration within the ECOWAS community.

The farewell event not only celebrated the volunteers’ service but also underscored the ongoing need for passionate individuals to support Sierra Leone’s development journey.
