Focal Person at the Ministry of Health and Sanitation, Dr. Joseph Sam Kanu has said there is no need for people to take antibiotics after sex or monthly period because it is a normal procedure.

He made this disclosure during the Antimicrobial awareness raising week from 18th – 24th November, 2022. He said the Ministry has set up the Antimicrobial Committee and put together a Strategic Plan with six objectives. One of them, according to him is creating awareness on the issue of Antimicrobial resistance in the country.

“The rate at which people misuse antibiotics is alarming in the country’, he  said, adding that significant steps have been taken to address the problem. Dr. Kanu said what they have to do at the moment is to create awareness since they don’t have the power to stop the misuse of antibiotics.

It could be recalled that Sierra Leone joined the  World Health Organization (WHO)  to commemorate the week on the theme: Preventing Antimicrobial resistance together.
