The Ministry of Youth in Kono district has disclosed plans to improve sporting venues and to even construct a stadium in the district. This was revealed by a representative from the said ministry Augusta Bockarie when giving an update on the operations of the ministry in their maiden meeting held with 5th councils on the 14th September 2023.
She said the idea of constructing the said stadium in the district came as a result of a piece of land given to the ministry by some stakeholders and chiefs at Fiadu in Kono district in order to support sporting activities.
Madam Bockarie intimated the audience that after series of meetings with the Chiefs and other key stakeholders a team of technical officials have paid visit to the site and have approved that the piece of land is ideal for such us.
“As sporting activities are very expensive the ministry has pleaded with it partners and philanthropists to inject life into the plans afoot by the ministry by supporting it to come true,” Madam Bockarie appeals.
She revealed that as part of support to sporting activities in the district the ministry has provided financial support in the tune of one million five hundred old thousand Leones to different cycling clubs in the district.
Meanwhile, in the area of supporting youths Madam Bockarie appreciate the ministry for the disbursement of the last quarterly funds which enhanced a skill development training at Ngayaa town for at least fifteen (15) youths drawn from Nimikoro,Nimiyama and Gorama Kono chiefdoms in Kono district benefited.
She further commended GIZ and Partners in Health PIH for their full involvement into the ministry in the implementation of youth programs unlike other organizations which she said operate in isolation.
According to her the last disbursement covered the purchase of machines for the car wash in Koidu city which work has been put on hold. “On behalf of the Kono office we are pleading with those in Freetown to complete the said work so that it can be officially commissioned for the use of our youths”, Augusta Bockarie stressed”.
She however noted the following as some of the challenges faced by the ministry in the district: Late disbursement of funds for implementation and funds disbursed are very small for the activities of the aforementioned ministry in the district.
