Hon. Min. Dr. Isata Mahoi attended the launch of the Positive Parenting Education Program, an initiative aimed at empowering parents and caregivers with essential skills to foster healthier family environments. The Ministry of Social Welfare organized the event and drew the participation of government officials, Members of Parliament, community leaders, and representatives from various non-governmental organizations.
In her address at the event, Dr. Mahoi emphasized the crucial role of effective parenting in shaping the nation’s future. She highlighted the home as the primary environment where children learn important values such as love, respect, and responsibility.
The Positive Parenting Education Program is designed to equip parents with effective communication techniques, emotional intelligence, and positive discipline strategies to navigate the challenges of modern parenting.
Dr. Mahoi acknowledged the unique difficulties faced by families in Sierra Leone, including economic hardships, social inequalities, and traditional cultural practices that can sometimes hinder effective parenting. She pointed out that the program aligns with national frameworks such as the Child Rights Act of 2007 and the National Policy on Gender Equality (GEWE 2020), essential for supporting families and safeguarding children’s rights.
A significant focus of the program is on the mental health and well-being of both parents and children. Recognizing the stresses of parenting, the initiative aims to provide access to mental health resources and support networks. This approach is intended to help parents manage stress, build resilience, and create a positive and nurturing atmosphere at home, thereby contributing to children’s emotional and psychological development.
Dr. Mahoi called for strong collaboration among government bodies, non-governmental organizations, community leaders, and parents to ensure the program’s success. She emphasized the need for a collective effort to build a comprehensive support system that can significantly enhance the well-being of families nationwide.
The Positive Parenting Education Program is seen as a strategic investment in Sierra Leone’s future. It focuses on creating a more supportive environment for children to thrive. The program will be rolled out in various communities in the coming months, with a call to action for all stakeholders to actively engage in its implementation.
The event concluded with a shared commitment from all participants to support the program’s goals, aiming to make a lasting impact on the lives of children and families throughout Sierra Leone.
