Giving a brief overview of drug abuse (kush), Sierra Leone’s Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Mr. Moriba S. Koroma lauded an outstanding appreciation on the US delegation for their visit, noting key areas and challenges facing the fight against drug abuse and security issues in the Country.
He said the Government is being very much proactive in tackling, eradicating drug abuse, and ensuring the security and safety of its people. According to him, the intake of drugs in the Country is devastating and destroying the lives of many youth, noting that all measures are being taken to tackle drug abuse but to eradicate the pandemic immediately, they need the support of international communities.
The Deputy Minister applauded the initiative of the US visit and concerns over Sierra Leone, in the intervention and fight against drug abuse, and called for donor support to establish more rehabilitation centres, as a way of tackling drug abuse in Sierra Leone.
On his part, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Internal Affairs Mr. Alfred Lahai also delved into the issue of Kush pandemic in the Country, adding that, the drug abuse is devastating and killing the future of young generations. He pointed out that though Government is playing pivotal role in the fight against drug abuse, but they need the support of donor partners and the International communities.
Meanwhile, the Director of Police Affairs in the Ministry of Internal Affairs Mrs. Elizabeth Turay, also explained the issues surrounding the fight against drug abuse and security issues of the country. She made mentioned of key areas of constraints in the fight against drug abuse, adding that they need donor support in boosting Government efforts to tackle drug abuse. She however, added that the Ministry is committed to upholding the peace and security of the Country, noting that the security of the Country is calm. She added that in strengthening the security of the country, they need more support and enforcement in ensuring the peace and stability of the Country.
In his remarks, the team lead, Mr. William J. Mcglynn Senior Advisor of the US Department of State Bureau of the International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs in the United States, underlined the significance of drug abuse and security issues as the two major concerns of any country, and commended the Ministry of Internal Affairs for their intervention in maintaining the peace and security of the Country. While pledging their support, he mentioned that drug abuse and security issues, are critical issues in any Country, that calls for swift intervention, noting that to tackle drug abuse in any country they need to support and train people in specialised and technical areas, in the intervention and prevention of drug abuse in the Country.
