In a significant move to improve healthcare delivery, the Government of Sierra Leone, through the Ministry of Health (MoH) and in collaboration with key partners such as the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, and UNFPA Sierra Leone, has launched the Nationwide Health Train Campaign 2025. The campaign, which began on 21st March, aims to assess and enhance health services across all districts in the country.
The first stop of this ambitious initiative is Moyamba District, where the focus is on evaluating the quality of healthcare services, identifying strengths and weaknesses, and collaborating with local authorities to improve patient care. The campaign brings together the District Health Management Team (DHMT), community leaders, and other stakeholders to foster a collaborative approach to healthcare reform.
During the visit, Dr. Austin Demby, the Minister of Health, led a high-level delegation to engage with various community representatives in a town hall meeting held at the Moyamba City Council Hall. The meeting included local leaders, youth groups, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders, all of whom shared their views on the current state of healthcare delivery in the district.
Following the community engagement, Dr. Demby and his team conducted a comprehensive tour of the Moyamba Government Hospital. The tour allowed the delegation to observe the services provided, identify areas for improvement, and assess the existing challenges in healthcare delivery. Discussions centred on practical solutions to enhance patient care and strengthen the healthcare system in the district.
During his address, Dr. Demby emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring quality healthcare services for all Sierra Leoneans. He highlighted the importance of community participation in shaping health policies and finding sustainable solutions to healthcare challenges. “This campaign is not just about assessing our healthcare system—it is about listening to the people, understanding their needs, and working together to deliver better health outcomes,” he said.
The people of Moyamba welcomed the initiative with enthusiasm, expressing their readiness to support the government and its partners in transforming healthcare services. Local leaders and community representatives praised the Ministry of Health for prioritizing their concerns and pledged to collaborate in addressing the identified gaps.
The Nationwide Health Train Campaign 2025 will continue to other districts in the coming months, with the goal of fostering a patient-centred healthcare system across Sierra Leone. This innovative approach is expected to create lasting improvements by combining government oversight, community engagement, and technical support from international health partners.
As the campaign progresses, the Ministry of Health remains focused on achieving better healthcare outcomes, increasing access to quality medical services, and ensuring that no district is left behind in the nation’s quest for improved healthcare delivery.
