The Ministry of Gender and Children’s Affairs hosted its third coordination and planning meeting today to prepare for the upcoming 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and Violence Against Children.

Chaired by Director Marian Goodie Sowonie, Permanent Secretary Mrs. Aminata Sannoh, Assistant Director Bamie Sesay, and Deputy Chief Director Charles Vandy, the meeting gathered representatives from key organizations to finalize action points as the campaign approached.

Director Goodie Sowonie welcomed representatives from groups including Amnesty International, “Leh We Learn,” UNICEF, Youth Association Sierra Leone, and the Mano River Union, urging them to make meaningful contributions. She recapped prior meetings, where they outlined support areas, including financial aid, theme localization for grassroots outreach, and the formation of committee groups to steer campaign activities.

Amnesty International committed LE 5,000, lauding the ministry’s drive to raise awareness of GBV. A representative emphasized the campaign’s role in affirming protections for women and children. Meanwhile, the IBTK Foundation pledged $1,000 to bolster event preparations.

Deputy Chief Director Charles Vandi stressed ongoing collaboration among partners, urging them to share concept notes and program proposals for smooth coordination. He also highlighted the Child Rights Act (CRA) Bill, currently under parliamentary review, which he described as “indispensable” for the ministry’s mission. Vandy expressed optimism that it could strengthen campaign efforts if the CRA passes before the 16 Days of Activism.

Assistant Director Bami Sesay noted that the ministry shared a detailed concept note and matrix with partners to ensure each activity aligns with campaign goals. He also announced a forthcoming town hall meeting, where stakeholders will discuss challenges related to Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV).

The event will include three sub-committees: the Outreach Committee, tasked with grassroots sensitization; the School and University Committee, responsible for educational outreach; and the Media Committee, to promote the campaign.

The meeting concluded with a discussion on the launch of the “Real Man Campaign,” led by Mrs. Ella. The campaign aims to engage men in advocating against violence toward women and promote male inclusivity in protection efforts. Mrs. Ella emphasized the importance of men’s participation in addressing and reducing gender-based violence.

With increasing partner support and dedicated campaign activities, the Ministry is poised to make a lasting impact during the 16 Days of Activism.
