Ministry of Fisheries Underscores Development Gains

Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources, Princess Bio Dugba has outlined significant achievements in the fisheries sector, emphasizing sustainability and international trade in a move aimed at conserving marine resources, Minister Dugba announced a seasonal closure of artisanal fishing set for February 2025.

This announcement was made during a press conference held by the Ministry of Information and Civic Education.

This initiative is designed to allow fish stocks to replenish, ensuring long-term sustainability for the fishing industry.

To support local fishermen during this period, the ministry promised to provide alternative livelihoods and access to medical facilities, highlighting the government’s commitment to the well-being of its citizens.

The Minister also unveiled exciting plans for the export of fish to China by 2025, reporting that the necessary paperwork is nearing completion.

This initiative aims to open new markets for Sierra Leone’s fisheries, potentially boosting the national economy and increasing revenue for local fishermen.

Moreover, the Black Johnson Fish Harbour project is set to move forward, with contractors from China expected to arrive in Sierra Leone by March 2025.

This project is anticipated to enhance local infrastructure and create job opportunities within the community, further contributing to economic growth.

Minister Dugba celebrated the ministry’s recent achievement of exceeding its revenue targets, promising to disclose specific figures in January 2025. This accomplishment reflects the government’s effective management and strategic initiatives aimed at revitalizing the fisheries sector.

These developments underscore a robust commitment to sustainable fishing practices and economic enhancement in Sierra Leone.

The government’s proactive approach not only aims to protect marine resources but also seeks to improve the livelihoods of those dependent on the fisheries sector, fostering growth and resilience in the face of environmental challenges.
