In partnership with stakeholders, the Deputy Minister II of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (MAFS) officially inaugurated and handed over an Orange Flesh Sweet Potato (OFSP) Processing Facility to farmers in the Matotoka community, Tonkolili District.

This facility is part of a project funded by the European Union (EU) and implemented by a consortium led by Welthungerhilfe in collaboration with the Bombali, Tonkolili, and Kambia District Councils. The initiative aims to improve the livelihoods of sweet potato farmers through value addition and post-harvest innovations, directly benefiting 1,000 farmers across the three districts.

The project prioritizes empowering rural women and youth to foster resilient and sustainable economic development in Bombali, Kambia, and Tonkolili. It aligns with the Feed Salone Strategy’s Pillars 2, 3, and 6. It focuses on providing farmers with seedlings and essential inputs, establishing modern processing facilities, and advancing youth and women empowerment through the Youth Economic Development (YED) program.

During the ceremony, the MADAM program Director highlighted the project’s importance to the Matotoka community, emphasizing its role in enhancing food security and economic opportunities.

In his keynote address, Deputy Minister II, Sahr Hemore, expressed appreciation to the EU for its support and encouraged the community to utilize the facility effectively to further the government’s Feed Salone agenda.

Representatives from the EU Delegation and other key stakeholders also delivered remarks, underscoring the collaborative effort behind the project’s success.

The event concluded with the symbolic handover of keys and a ribbon-cutting ceremony, which signified the facility’s official commissioning.
