The Minister of Internal Affairs, Rtd. AIG Morie Lengor Esq., conducted an inspection of the ongoing construction projects at the Sierra Leone Correctional Service (SLCS) sites in Kissy Town and Waterloo on Tuesday, March 25, 2025.
The inspection, accompanied by senior SLCS officials, aimed to assess the progress of construction projects designed to alleviate overcrowding and improve the rehabilitation of inmates.
The Director General of SLCS, Mr. Joseph Senesie, provided an overview of the project, which includes the construction of schools, training centers, holding facilities, detention cells for both male and female inmates, as well as accommodation for SLCS personnel. He highlighted that once completed, these facilities would help ease the overcrowding at the Male Correctional Facility at Pademba Road, improve training opportunities for inmates, and address key challenges in rehabilitating them as productive members of society.
However, DG Senesie also raised concerns about the encroachment of individuals constructing residential buildings near the site. He warned that such developments could compromise both the security and privacy of the facility, presenting a significant long-term risk.
During the inspection, Minister Lengor commended the scale and importance of the construction project. He expressed gratitude to President Brig. Rtd. Julius Maada Bio and Vice President Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh, who also serves as the Chairman of the Correctional Council, for their commitment to strengthening the SLCS and advancing the government’s Human Capital Development Agenda.
The minister reiterated his commitment to securing more support for the SLCS and confirmed that plans were in progress to relocate the Pademba Road Male Correctional Centre. He assured the Director General that the government would intervene promptly to address the security concerns posed by unauthorized constructions near the facility. Minister Lengor pledged that decisive actions would be taken to prevent further encroachment and ensure the safety and security of the correctional facilities.
The minister also praised DG Senesie for his leadership and dedication to transforming the SLCS. He urged correctional staff to continue fostering teamwork and cooperation to create a peaceful and efficient working environment that aligns with the institution’s goals.
The tour concluded with a group photograph, marking a significant step toward the realization of a modern and rehabilitative correctional system in Sierra Leone.
