In a proactive move to bolster public safety ahead of the holidays, Minister of Internal Affairs Rtd. AIG Morie Lengor Esq. on Monday, 8 December 2025, held a strategic meeting with Inspector General of Police William Fayia Sellu, Deputy Inspector General Sahr Yomba Senesi, and Local Unit Commanders of the Western Area at the Police Officers Mess in Kingtom, Freetown. The engagement sought to heighten security measures in the face of emerging threats and reinforce efforts to curb lawlessness nationwide.

Addressing the commanders, Minister Lengor underscored the need for increased vigilance as the Christmas period approaches. He urged the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) to intensify enforcement to ensure discipline is maintained across the country.

“The primary responsibility of the Sierra Leone Police is to protect lives and property,” he stated, calling on commanders to understand the security dynamics within their operational areas and to adopt swift, preventive measures to address emerging issues.

The Minister commended the SLP for its progress in combating drug abuse particularly the spread of Kush and urged the force to maintain strong enforcement efforts to restore public order during the festive season.

He further highlighted the broader national campaign against lawlessness and indiscipline, noting that while progress has been made, sustained action is essential to support economic growth and boost investor confidence. Minister Lengor emphasised ongoing crackdowns on illegal and unsafe practices, including excessive noise pollution in residential areas, reiterating that public discipline remains a government priority.

He also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to enforcing the ban on commercial motorbike riders (okadas) in the Central Business District (CBD). He noted that enforcement led by the police and transport unions has significantly improved traffic management and public safety, and encouraged the police to remain uncompromising in upholding the regulations.

The Minister urged commanders to strengthen community policing initiatives, noting that effective law enforcement is greatly enhanced through partnership and engagement with community stakeholders.

“One of my goals is to make Sierra Leone one of the most peaceful and safest countries in the world,” Minister Lengor concluded.

Responding to the Minister’s directives, Inspector General of Police William Fayia Sellu echoed the concerns raised and referenced previous engagements with Local Unit Commanders. He assured the Minister that the SLP will intensify security operations to maintain peace throughout the festive period and beyond.
