In a significant effort to enhance healthcare delivery and reduce maternal and child mortality rates, the Government of Sierra Leone, alongside international partners, has unveiled a comprehensive aid package worth over three million United States Dollars. This initiative, spearheaded by Minister of Health Dr. Austin Demby, aims to fortify the country’s free healthcare system and expand medical support to remote regions.
The announcement, made on Wednesday in Freetown, introduced seven new vehicles dedicated to facilitating the mobility of medical supplies and overseeing healthcare provisions across various districts. Minister Demby underscored the pivotal role of these vehicles in ensuring efficient oversight and monitoring of healthcare services, emphasizing their distribution to district headquarters.
“We are committed to ensuring every pregnant woman can access safe delivery, every newborn has the best chance at life, and every teenager can maintain good health,” stated Dr. Demby, highlighting the initiative’s core objectives. The minister expressed gratitude to both the government and donor partners for their continuous support in bolstering Sierra Leone’s healthcare infrastructure.
Jattu Abdulai, Acting Managing Director of the National Medical Supply Agency, emphasized the agency’s mandate in procuring and distributing health commodities to government hospitals nationwide. The collaboration between the agency and the Ministry of Health aims to strengthen the supply chain, ensuring essential medical items reach all government health facilities efficiently.
The investment marks a pivotal step towards advancing President Bio’s healthcare agenda, supported by collaborative efforts aimed at improving access to quality healthcare services throughout Sierra Leone.
