Sierra Leone’s Minister of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, Nabeela Tunis, recently conducted an on-the-spot visit to traders as part of the ongoing year-long domestic tourism campaign. Accompanied by her Deputy, Khadijatu Grace Kamara, the Director of Culture, Foday Jalloh, the Administrative Manager of the Monument and Relics Commission, Ann-Marie Kamara, and Ag. Senior Assistant Secretary, Fatmata Samura, the Minister embarked on a conducted tour of Sierra Leone’s oldest market, the Big Market.
Situated at Wallace Johnson in Freetown and dating back to the 18th century, Sierra Leone Big Market is renowned for its diverse range of arts and crafts. The market features wooden carvings, drums, jewelry, paintings, wooden crafts like shukublai, and other locally made textiles. Not only is it the oldest market in the country, but it also holds the distinction of being the largest artisans market in Sierra Leone.
During the market tour, Minister Tunis expressed that the visit was part of the ongoing efforts to promote domestic tourism by showcasing the market’s offerings. She commended those who have excelled in utilizing locally made materials. Minister Tunis emphasized that the visit to Big Market aligns with the January theme of “Explore and Discover,” aimed at encouraging more people to visit various places and explore the rich cultural offerings.
The traders at the market welcomed the Minister and her team, viewing it as an opportunity not only to display their merchandise but also to actively participate in the year-long “Tourism for All” campaign. The visit served as a platform for the traders to engage with the Minister and contribute to the promotion of domestic tourism.
