In a significant move to expand international collaboration and strengthen research capacity, the Vice Chancellor and Principal of Milton Margai Technical University (MMTU), Professor Philip John Kanu, recently held high-level meetings with senior officials at Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) in Cambridge, United Kingdom.

During his visit to ARU’s Chelmsford Campus, Professor Kanu was hosted by Dr. Robin Gowers, Head of the Writtle School of Agriculture, and was given a guided tour of the university’s experimental farm and greenhouses, where postgraduate students are actively engaged in cutting-edge agricultural research.

The discussions focused on potential partnerships in research collaboration and capacity building, particularly for MMTU faculty in key areas such as agriculture, engineering, health, and education. Professor Kanu also visited several of ARU’s faculties, including the Faculty of Business and Law, the Faculty of Science and Engineering (home to the School of Engineering and the Built Environment), the Faculty of Arts, Humanities, Education and Social Sciences and the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Social Care.

A key highlight of the engagement was a proposed joint research initiative to address the rising threat of substance abuse in Sierra Leone, particularly the use of Kush and tramadol a growing crisis that poses severe risks to public health, youth development, agriculture, and the overall economy.

Professor Kanu stressed the urgency of the issue and expressed MMTU’s keen interest in partnering with ARU to design evidence-based, research-driven solutions to combat drug abuse and its far-reaching consequences.

The visit marked a positive step toward building global academic partnerships that can contribute to solving national challenges through innovation, research, and education.
