Milestone Mining Company (SL) Ltd displayed its commitment to community development on the 15th of June 2024, by disbursing a significant amount of Le 1,258,324 as Surface Rent to mining-affected chiefdoms in Kambia District, Sierra Leone. The event, which brought together a diverse group of individuals including government representatives, community stakeholders, and members of the media, was held at the Kambia Resource Centre.
The company’s managers, Mohamed Turay and Samuel Kamara, emphasized the importance of their ongoing collaboration with local communities. Mr. Turay highlighted Milestone Mining Company’s dedication to fulfilling its obligations towards the operational areas, recognizing the crucial role that the communities play in the company’s success. He stressed that prioritizing landowners and community engagement are integral to the company’s operations.
During the ceremony, discussions centered on the community development initiatives already undertaken by the company’s parent company, Leone Rock Metal Group. These efforts, aimed at improving local infrastructure and empowering residents, serve as a model for Milestone Mining Company’s future projects pending support from all stakeholders.
The National Minerals Agency (NMA), represented by Mr. Peter Henry, affirmed its support for Milestone and the operational communities, underscoring the company as a frontrunner for the Mining License. Mr. Henry outlined the benefits that the company’s presence would bring, including youth employment opportunities and overall community growth.
Responding on behalf of the affected chiefdoms, Paramount Chief Alimamy Sorie Yilla issued recommendations to Milestone Mining Company, advocating for the establishment of vocational training centers and scholarship schemes to benefit residents. He also urged government officials present to consider increasing the percentage of Surface Rent allocated to landowners and ensuring timely disbursement of funds such as the Constituency Development Fund.
Ing. Samuel Kamara, representing LRMG/Milestone, assured attendees that the company’s commitment to the region is long-term. He pledged the rehabilitation and restoration of land post-mining activities, emphasizing the sustainability of future economic activities like agriculture. Mr. Kamara detailed the specific allocation of surface rent per chiefdom and declared a 5% increment every two years, starting immediately.
In a symbolic gesture, both Mr Kamara and Mr. Turay presented the symbolic cheque to the three Paramount Chiefs in attendance, signifying the company’s dedication to community welfare. The support and endorsements offered by various stakeholders, including civil society representatives, local council members, and parliamentarians, further solidified the collaborative efforts between Milestone Mining Company and the operational communities.
