In a spirited welcome address at the Strengthening Capacity, Improving Opportunities, and Advancing Women’s Empowerment event, the Hon. Minister of Gender and Children Affairs, Dr. Isata Mahoi has in press conference held at the Vanilla Complex, Aberdeen, on February 20th 2024, emphasized the central role of women in driving socio-economic development. Organized by SEND Sierra Leone in collaboration with the Ministry of Gender and Children’s Affairs, the event gathered passionate female councilors, mayors, ministers, advocates and stakeholders dedicated to advancing gender equality.
Expressing her excitement, Minister Mahoi underscored the imperative for women to rise and achieve their goals. “It’s not by mistake that we are placed in these positions. It’s a call that all of us should heed to raise our fellow women from the shackles of poverty and empower them, especially our women at the local level,” she proclaimed.
Reflecting on her journey and the inspiration drawn from initiatives like the Network of Women Ministers and Parliamentarians (NeWMAP), Minister Mahoi highlighted the need to revitalize such structures for sustained progress. She noted that they need to work together, devoid of political party affiliations, to promote cross-party initiatives and demonstrate that women can lead effectively.
The NeWMAP, as described by the minister, serves as a platform for networking, collaboration, and capacity enhancement. Minister Mahoi emphasized the importance of action over mere representation, urging women to demonstrate their capabilities in leadership roles. Dr. Mohair declared that It is not only about the numbers; it’s about what they do and their capacity to deliver. She asserted that they must prove that women can excel when unite.
Addressing the diverse audience, including female ministers, parliamentarians, councilors, mayors, and deputies, Minister Mahoi commended their dedication and urged continued commitment to empowering women at all levels of society. She emphasized the importance of sustained engagement with development partners to ensure the longevity and of initiatives like NeWMAP.
