In an effort to address the rising challenge of hereditary blood disorders, Mercy Hospital in Kulanda Town, Bo City, hosted a free sickle cell screening on Saturday, April 12, 2025.

The event was designed to identify individuals living with sickle cell disease as well as those who carry the sickle cell trait. Health experts at the hospital emphasized that early diagnosis is critical for effective management and improving the quality of life for patients.

Hospital staff explained that the screening was part of Mercy Hospital’s broader public health initiative to raise awareness about sickle cell disease and provide affected individuals with access to essential medical support. Participants received blood tests and counseling services throughout the day.

“The goal is to reach as many people as possible so they can know their status and begin appropriate care if needed,” a medical officer at the hospital explained.

A significant number of residents turned out for the free service, reflecting a growing awareness and interest in preventive healthcare within the community.

Sickle cell disease is a genetic condition that affects red blood cells and can lead to complications such as anemia, chronic pain, and organ damage. Although there is no universal cure, early detection and ongoing management can significantly reduce the severity of symptoms and improve long-term outcomes.

Mercy Hospital remains committed to enhancing community healthcare through initiatives like these and continues to encourage the public to prioritize their health by participating in regular screenings.
