Man Sentenced to Six Months Imprisonment for Stealing Mobile Phone

The Makeni Resident Magistrate, Kabine Kamara, has sentenced James Kanu to six months imprisonment for stealing a mobile phone.

According to the particulars of the offence, on Friday, 22nd August 2025, at Masuba Village, Gbanti Chiefdom in the Bombali Judicial District, Northern Sierra Leone, James Kanu stole a blue-black Infinix mobile phone, the property of Fatmata Tarawally.

Reports further indicate that Fatmata Tarawally, the complainant, immediately reported the theft to the police. After an investigation, James Kanu was charged with one count of larceny, contrary to Section 2 of the Larceny Act of 1916.

In his second appearance before Magistrate Kabine Kamara, James Kanu pleaded guilty to the charge and was sentenced to six months imprisonment or to pay a fine of 5,000 Leones. Kanu now faces the option of either paying the fine or serving his sentence at the Makeni Correctional Centre.

The case was prosecuted by Sergeant 6226 Sesay, while Lawyer A. S. Sumalia from the Sierra Leone Legal Aid Board served as the defence counsel for the convict.
