The Makeni 2026 Street Child Sierra Leone Marathon has attracted 100 international runners ahead of the race scheduled for Sunday, October 25, 2026, in Makeni.
Local Race Director Alusine Kanu said the marathon has been moved from its traditional May date to October following concerns raised by international participants about the climatic conditions during previous editions.
Kanu said registration for the event is progressing well, with all available spaces for the 5K category already sold out.
“We’re proud to confirm the participation of 100 international runners from various countries,” he said.
He also disclosed that Marampa Mines Limited has purchased 500 participation spots, making the company the leading sponsor of this year’s event.
According to Kanu, registration remains open for the 10K, half marathon and full marathon categories. He commended Africell Sierra Leone, one of the event’s consistent sponsors, for supporting the digital registration process.
Participants can also register through Afrimoney using Merchant Code 76081.
Kanu further announced an increase in cash prizes across all four race categories, noting that the Makeni marathon continues to attract participants from different parts of Sierra Leone, including Freetown and Bo.
“There will also be prizes from Cowbell Milk and other sponsors,” he added.
The race will conclude at the Makeni Wusum Field, with organizers targeting an initial participation of 1,000 runners.
Kanu urged interested participants to register early, as registration spaces are limited.
