The Kono Women’s Organization has officially handed over two newly constructed hand pumps to the management of the Koidu Government Hospital in a bid to ease the challenges faced by patients and healthcare workers in accessing clean water.

The handover ceremony, held at the hospital grounds, attracted various stakeholders and community members from across Kono District.

Giving a brief background of the organization, Honourable Rebecca Yei Sam explained that the Kono Women’s Organization was founded in 2017 with the aim of giving back to the community where its members were raised. She emphasized that giving back whether through literal or symbolic contributions demonstrates gratitude, responsibility, and a desire to build a better future for the next generation.

According to Honourable Sam, the organization was formed to unite daughters of Kono, both at home and abroad, in support of the district’s development. Since its inception, the organization has contributed meaningfully to several local initiatives, including the recent construction of the two hand pumps—funded solely through members’ personal contributions.

“As an organization, we are optimistic that these two pumps will significantly alleviate the water access challenges faced by patients and medical staff,” Honourable Sam stated. “This facility will not only benefit the hospital but also serve nearby communities.” She encouraged her fellow members to continue their goodwill efforts for the betterment of Kono District.

Madam Finda Mbawoh, another prominent member of the organization, expressed gratitude to those present at the ceremony. She reiterated that the group’s main objective is to drive meaningful development in Kono. “We have bigger plans ahead,” she said, while urging the community to value and make good use of the donated facilities, assuring them that more development projects targeting other institutions are in the pipeline.

Speaking on behalf of the hospital, Dr. Wurie, the Medical Superintendent of Koidu Government Hospital, highlighted the significance of the donation. He explained that the hand pumps will not only improve water access for staff and patients but also support the ongoing construction of the Maternal Centre of Excellence.

Dr. Wurie, a seasoned health practitioner with experience across several districts in Sierra Leone, praised what he described as a “development competition” taking place in Kono, noting that the district is progressing impressively compared to others he has worked in.

He concluded by assuring attendees that the Maternal Centre of Excellence will soon be completed and commissioned, marking another milestone in the district’s health sector development.
