Confirmed information making the rounds in Kono District states that the district has performed poorly in this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examinations (BECE).

The information noted that Kono District over the years has consecutively performed poorly at external examinations unlike other districts which have been performing extremely well a situation which will in no doubt negatively affect the development of human capital in the district if not promptly addressed.

It could be recalled that in this year’s NPSE examination, the district also performed poorly which saw a heated blame game between teachers and parents as to who is responsible for such abysmal performance of pupils at external examinations.

Among factors proffered to this medium that are responsible for the said poor performance of pupils at external examinations includes: parents not monitoring their children or wards academic work and some teachers not up to the task of effectively teaching the pupils to name but a few are seriously responsible for the district been always relegated in terms of academic excellence in the country.

Some residents of the municipality of Koidu who spoke to our Kono District correspondent on the said issue have urged school administrators and the ministry of education in the district to work hard in order to change the present negative status quo in academia in Kono District as diamonds have failed the district noting that education which they believe will change such narratives has also started discouraging them.

Sources very close to the Education Ministry in Freetown maintained that the following are percentages scored by the respective districts: Kenema 88.0 percent, Bombali 88.1 percent, Tonkolili 86.8 percent, Kailahun 85.9 percent, Bonthe 84.2 percent, Karena 81.4 percent, Pujehun 80.1 percent, Western Urban 78.7 percent, Bo 77.0 percent, Port Loko 76.5 percent, Western Rural 76.1 percent, Kambia 74.7 percent, Koinadugu 74.1 percent, Falaba 68.6 percent, Moyamba 65.2 percent, Kono 59.1 percent and neighboring Guinea 55.8 percent.
