The Paramount Chief of Fiama Chiefdom in Kono District, also doubles as Kono District Paramount Chief Member of Parliament, Honourable PC Sahr Yongai Kontanday Mbriwa has urged his newly inaugurated chiefdom speaker to put the interest of the chiefdom people above his personal interest as the office of the chiefdom speaker belongs to the people.

Honourable Paramount Chief Mbriwa made the statement in an interview with our correspondent on the overall justification of the appointment and inauguration of Alhaji Sahr Mohamed Konneh Fomba as the substantive speaker of the above Chiefdom.

The installation of the Speaker followed the death of the former speaker, Chief Gbondabia Fomba two years ago.

Hon. Sahr Yongai Kotanday Mbriwa is quoted as saying: “I mandated my chiefdom council to consult the various towns and sectional authorities within the chiefdom and the rightful family in a bid to appoint somebody that could serve in the position for the overall development of the chiefdom.”

He therefore commended members of the Fiama chiefdom council and the family for demonstrating their unflinching commitment to the peace and unity of the chiefdom.

The Kono Senior District Officer (SDO), Augustine Forgbei said it is stipulated in the 2009 Chieftaincy Act that the Chiefdom Speaker is the principal adviser and assistant to the Paramount Chief.  The officer holder of a speaker position is there supposed to perform delegated by the Paramount Chief and supervises all sub-chiefs in the chiefdom and directly account and reports to the Paramount Chief.

The SDO expressed delight over the fact that the people of Fiama chiefdom displayed maturity and democratic disposition in appointing a speaker without rancour.
