Kissy Ferry Terminal has emerged as the winner of the inaugural National Coastal Unity Boat Race 2026, organized by the Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs in collaboration with the GEED Foundation.
The event, held on April 5 along Freetown’s scenic coastline, showcased exceptional skill, teamwork, and unity among participating communities.
Sixteen coastal communities took part in the competition, with Kissy Ferry Terminal delivering an outstanding performance to secure the championship title. The race formed part of Sierra Leone’s 65th Independence Anniversary celebrations, highlighting the country’s rich maritime heritage and growing potential for sports tourism.
The Minister of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, Nabeela Farida Tunis, commended the teams for their sportsmanship and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to promoting coastal tourism and cultural activities. The Chief Executive Officer of the GEED Foundation also praised the strong partnership with the government, describing the event as a major success.
As winners, Kissy Ferry Terminal received a cash prize of NLe 50,000, while the first and second runners-up were awarded NLe 40,000 and NLe 30,000, respectively.
The National Coastal Unity Boat Race was designed to promote national unity, celebrate cultural heritage, and support tourism development in Sierra Leone. Participants not only competed but also showcased their traditions, reflecting the country’s vibrant culture and strong community spirit.
Organizers expressed optimism about the future of the event, stating that plans are underway to make it an annual fixture on the national calendar. They believe the initiative will further position Sierra Leone’s coastline as a hub for cultural tourism and local innovation.
