At the two-day retreat organized by the administration of the Bo Government Secondary School in Bo at the Dohas hotel, the principal himself while facilitating cautioned his staff about various approaches to treating pupils and treating their respective parents.

He was engaging his teachers on teaching methodology and classroom management.

“If you fail to plan, you plan to fail”, He earmarked.

The pass rate in the BECE exam this year has been better than previous years and the school is preparing to do better which is why the retreat was organized.

The old boys association, OBBA also gave their support in the organization of the retreat. And it looked like an in-service training for teachers of this noble school. Facilitators were drawn from the university and the ministry of basic education. The principal reminded the staff that the school was built for 350 pupils and now they have over 800 pupils in the school.  Government therefore needs to fast track the BADEA project to add to the dormitories and classrooms. So the entry requirement was made tough this year for both JSS1 and SS1 entries respectively.

In his facilitation, principal Kpakra highlighted various techniques in teaching that will enhance the success of pupils at public exams. That teaching is basically about “provoking the thought process”.

He encouraged the teachers to build respect and trust first before achieving any other goal in the classroom. He cautioned them not to threaten pupils to attend their extra lessons as this will bring bad blood between them and parents. The session was interactive as group discussions were encouraged. He allowed the teachers to come up with their experiences in the classroom. Yatta Kaikai, one of the teachers of Bo school was very happy with the training and thanked the leadership for refreshing their minds after leaving college for about ten years. She said “we have taken triple steps in making our teaching better for the coming years”. The essence of the retreat also was to build unity among staff of the school as there were apparent camps among staff before the current principal, Edward Kpakra took over. If put into practice by these teachers. It looks like a very bright academic year lies ahead of pupils of the Bo Government Secondary school.
