In a landmark ruling, High Court Judge Hon. Justice Hannah Bonnie has acquitted and discharged thirty-four (34) out of sixty-one (61) inmates who appeared before the UNDP-funded Prison Court at the Waterloo Correctional Centre. This decision marks a significant step towards justice reform and offers a new beginning for many inmates seeking rehabilitation.

The Prison Court initiative forms part of Chief Justice Komba Kamanda’s ongoing efforts to accelerate access to justice, particularly for inmates who have experienced prolonged adjournments, those without indictments, the elderly, and individuals with mental health challenges.

Among those released were three female inmates, two of whom had been convicted of larceny. These convictions were handed down by magistrate courts in Waterloo and York for various offenses, including throwing missiles, receiving stolen property, wounding, fraudulent conversion, and common assault.

During the session, several inmates appealed directly to Justice Bonnie for mercy, expressing deep remorse.

“Mummy, most of us know our conduct was wrong, and we believe we were rightfully convicted. We’ve learnt our lesson and will take a complete turn and become better citizens,” said one of the inmates seeking a second chance.

One female inmate, previously convicted of larceny, made an emotional plea, explaining that her crime was driven by desperation.

“Stealing is not part of my DNA. I was left with no option as my children were starving,” she said, shedding light on the hardship behind her actions.

In her response, Justice Bonnie acknowledged their pleas but emphasized that their actions were both legally and morally wrong. She encouraged the released inmates to turn away from criminal behavior and engage in productive activities that contribute positively to national development.

Addressing procedural issues, Justice Bonnie drew attention to the situation of seventeen (17) inmates who had yet to receive indictments. She ordered the relevant authorities to ensure indictments are served promptly, so these individuals can access the High Court for a fair trial.

Justice Bonnie also directed the magistrate courts in Waterloo and York to expedite cases that have been pending for an extended period. Specifically, she ordered that the cases of Algasimu Sesay charged with stealing a phone valued at eight thousand New Leones and Issa Kargbo charged with simple larceny be tried summarily at the Magistrate Court.

The session concluded with inmates expressing their heartfelt gratitude to Hon. Justice Bonnie and the Chief Justice for what they described as a timely and life-changing intervention.
