In a groundbreaking move, Josephine Kamara, the newly appointed Director General of the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC), has become the first director general to visit regional stations of the corporation. Kamara’s visits included a stop at the SLBC station in Kono District, marking a historic first since the establishment of these regional stations.
Accompanied by the Director of Engineering, Alhaji Bangura, Kamara’s visit aimed to obtain firsthand information about the operations and challenges faced by the regional stations. This initiative underscores her commitment to understanding and improving the conditions of SLBC’s nationwide facilities.
Welcoming the delegation to the SLBC Broadcasting House at Mount Zion in Koidu City, Dauda Kamara, Station Manager for Kono District, expressed profound gratitude. He noted the significance of the visit, stating, “This is the first time a Director General has visited our station since its inception.” The station manager highlighted critical issues, including transmitter deficiencies and staff welfare concerns.
During the interactive session, staff members shared their concerns directly with the Director General, emphasizing the need for better welfare, capacity building, and academic scholarships. In response, Josephine Kamara emphasized her priority to address these issues, pledging support for staff welfare, equipment upgrades, and professional development.
Alhaji Bangura, Director of Engineering, pointed out the necessity for 1000-watt transmitters to ensure effective broadcast coverage in districts like Kono, Bo, Kenema, Kailahun, and Makeni. He assured the staff that with adequate support, significant improvements could be made.
Kamara expressed her admiration for the Kono team’s dedication, despite facing numerous challenges. She affirmed her commitment to teamwork and outlined her vision for the SLBC, which includes prioritizing welfare, capacity building, and equipment support across all levels.
The visit concluded with a tour of the SLBC facilities in Kono District, providing Kamara and her team a comprehensive understanding of the station’s infrastructure and operational needs.
In a related event, Josephine Kamara also participated in the official commissioning of a community radio station in Soa Chiefdom, extending her engagement with regional broadcasting initiatives beyond the SLBC stations.
Kamara’s proactive approach marks a significant shift in the SLBC’s leadership, setting a new precedent for engagement and support for regional broadcasting stations in Sierra Leone.
