In a significant achievement for national security, joint security forces stationed at the Jendema Mano River Division intercepted a concealed firearm during a meticulously executed border operation on Friday, November 29, 2024.
The operation, conducted around 9:00 AM at the Jendema Customs Complex a crucial trade and travel hub between Sierra Leone and Liberia underscores the unwavering commitment of security personnel to safeguarding the nation’s borders.
Two suspects, Aron Sambai and Morris Sonbala, both residents of Tennie Town in Liberia, were apprehended during the operation. A routine search uncovered a locally made shotgun (pistol) hidden beneath the seat of their unregistered red TVS Star Sport motorbike. The suspects, en route to Tennie Town, began blaming each other for the weapon, each denying ownership.
Following their arrest, the suspects were transferred to the Regional Criminal Investigation Department (CID) South in Bo City, where a thorough investigation is underway. Detective Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Titus Vandy, Regional Crime Officer South, assured the public that every effort would be made to ensure a robust case. “We will use all it takes to build a solid case,” DSP Vandy declared. He also confirmed that the case would soon be brought to court, with Detective Police Constable 15392 Bundu A.P. leading the investigative process under his direct supervision.
Leadership Commends Security Efforts
Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Brima Kanneh, the Regional Police Commander South and head of security operations in the region, praised the joint security team for their vigilance and swift action. AIG Kanneh emphasized the critical role of border security in preventing the proliferation of illegal firearms and maintaining regional stability. “This operation reflects our commitment to protecting citizens and ensuring peace within our borders,” he stated.
The Jendema Customs Complex, a key entry point along the Sierra Leone-Liberia border, facilitates significant cross-border trade and movement but has also become a target for smuggling and other illegal activities. The interception of the firearm highlights the dedication and professionalism of the security forces operating in this high-risk area.
Strengthening Cross-Border Security
This operation showcases the importance of cross-border collaboration and intelligence-sharing in combating crime. The leadership and strategic oversight of AIG Kanneh have been instrumental in fostering a culture of excellence and professionalism within the southern region’s security apparatus.
As investigations continue, DSP Vandy has called on the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to law enforcement agencies. “Community support is vital in our mission to maintain peace and security,” he emphasized.
This successful operation serves as a powerful reminder of the Sierra Leone Police’s dedication to protecting the nation’s borders and upholding the rule of law. It also highlights the importance of ongoing efforts to ensure the safety and security of all citizens in the region.
