The Republic of Iceland has expanded its diplomatic footprint in Africa with the inauguration of an embassy in Freetown, Sierra Leone. This move marks Serra Leone as the third African bilateral partner of Iceland, following Malawi and Uganda.
The embassy inauguration was commemorated with a celebratory event held at the Country Lodge in western Freetown, attended by government officials and members of the diplomatic community.
Addressing attendees at the cocktail party, Head of Chancery, Asdis Bjarnadottir highlighted the shared maritime heritage between Iceland and Sierra Leone, emphasizing the mutual reliance on the sea for sustenance despite differing climates. Bjarnadottir underscored Iceland’s commitment to fostering peace, cooperation, and development through the establishment of the embassy in Sierra Leone.
Drawing parallels between the economic trajectories of the two nations, Bjarnadottir noted Iceland’s transformation from one of Europe’s poorest countries to a thriving economy, achieved through the sustainable utilization of natural resources, particularly fisheries and renewable energy. Iceland aims to share its resilient development model with Sierra Leone, offering assistance and collaboration to bolster economic prosperity and social development.
Ms. Elin Rosa Sigurdardottir, Iceland’s Foreign Affairs Director-General, echoed Bjarnadottir’s sentiments, emphasizing the shared aspirations of Sierra Leone and Iceland on the international stage. Sigurdardottir highlighted Iceland’s educational advancements as a model for Sierra Leone’s development aspirations.
In response, Sierra Leone’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Musa Timothy Kabba, expressed gratitude to the Government of Iceland for deepening diplomatic ties. Minister Kabba acknowledged Iceland’s significant contributions to Sierra Leone’s marine resources sector, particularly in sustainable management practices and capacity building for fishing communities.
