The Senior Women’s National Cricket Team of Sierra Leone, fresh from their resounding victory at the Kalahari T20 Female Tournament in Botswana, presented their championship trophy to the Minister of Sports, Madam Augusta James Teima, in a formal ceremony held May 30 at Bishop House, Freetown.

The delegation, led by Chairman Francis Trevor Samura, was warmly received by the Minister, who praised the team for their outstanding performance and dedication. Expressing deep admiration for the players’ achievement, Madam Teima said, “I am so much happy for this accolade. I am moved. Not because you are ladies, but because you truly deserve this.”

“Cricket is one of the associations I have so much respect for. I will never be too busy to meet with you, no matter how tight my schedule is,” she added.

Madam Teima, herself a former cricketer, emphasized her emotional connection to the sport and the significance of the team’s success. She commended the players and assured them of increased government support moving forward.

“I am sorry you have not been supported since 2017, but going forward, I will put my foot down to ensure you receive the support you deserve. We are trying to change the landscape of sports in this country. We shouldn’t only support football, but also hardworking and high-performing associations like yours.”

She also extended appreciation to Coach John, who left England to guide the team to victory, and cautioned the team against complacency as they prepare for their next challenge in Rwanda. “Other teams will now look up to you. You must continue to raise your game.”

Minister James Teima concluded by promising to inform President Julius Maada Bio of the team’s success, mentioning his known support for cricket. “He will be very happy with my engagement with you. I wish you all the best and hope you continue to bring more laurels to Sierra Leone.”

The win in Botswana marks a significant milestone for women’s cricket in Sierra Leone and signals a bright future for the sport under renewed governmental support.
