President Julius Maada Bio has, on Saturday, 18th March, 2023, told the inhabitants of Gorama Kono Chiefdom in Kangama town that he has been travelling regularly overseas in order to clean up the messes that were created by the main opposition – All People’s Congress (APC) – led government on the global stage.
He was speaking in Kangama town, Gorama Chiefdom, in the Kono District, Eastern Sierra Leone, during his working visit to the district, where he cited that in one of his overseas travels in Japan, he and his delegation were prevented from occupying a hotel because they claimed that APC government had occupied there but failed to pay.
“It was so embarrassing that a whole presidential delegation was stopped from occupying the hotel because of the mess created by APC. We had to firstly pay the arrears that the APC government left before we were allowed to occupy the hotel.
Under the APC-led government, all the world knew about Sierra Leone were war, disease, corruption and injustice,” he told his audience.
President Bio said he has cleaned up the mess to the admiration of the international community, adding that the result of such action has been impressive.
“I was recently awarded the African Leader of the Year. One of my cabinet ministers was awarded the best minister in the whole world. Most recently, the renowned newspaper called the Times published that the Freetown peninsula was among the best 20 places in the world to live in. Last year, I was asked by the United Nations (UN) Secretary General to co-chair the Global Education Summit in New York. These successes, among many others, have made most Sierra Leoneans to be very proud of their country,” he said.
He told his audience that he was not in Kangama town to tell them lies or to play politics with their lives, noting that wherever the country’s name is mentioned around the world, it could be remembered for respecting women’s right, providing free quality education, removing the death penalty and the seditious libel law, combating corruption, enhancing civil liberties, among others.
“Since 2018, Sierra Leone is a respected member of the international community. Our relentless efforts to enhance positive transformation of the country have yielded fruits. Investors are now encouraged to come into the country to invest. Under my leadership, Sierra Leone is now in the news for all the good reasons,” he stated.
