The Human Rights Defenders Network Sierra Leone (HRDN-SL) issued a strong condemnation regarding the recent surge in threats and online attacks targeting journalist Amadu Lamrana Bah. The network, comprised of various civil society organizations and individuals dedicated to upholding human rights, emphasized the gravity of the situation amidst mounting concerns over press freedom in Sierra Leone.

Referencing the United Nations Declaration on the Right and Responsibility of Individuals to Promote and Protect Human Rights, HRDN-SL underscored the broad definition of human rights defenders, encompassing professionals, volunteers, journalists, and others engaged in human rights activities. Bah’s plight epitomizes the core principles of this declaration, particularly his exercise of the right to criticize government bodies and propose improvements, as outlined in Article 8(2).

The network expressed deep concern over the insults, intimidation, and threats directed at Bah, attributing them to supporters of the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) and government workers. Such attacks, occurring amidst Sierra Leone’s non-permanent membership at the UN Security Council, signal a critical juncture where safeguarding press freedom is paramount.

HRDN-SL unequivocally denounced all forms of intimidation and attempts to stifle press freedom, emphasizing the indispensable role journalists play in upholding democratic values. Urging the government to take immediate action, the network called for a thorough investigation into the threats against Bah and the prosecution of those responsible.

Furthermore, HRDN-SL implored the Sierra Leonean government to leverage its position within the UN Security Council not only to advocate for fundamental freedoms but also to ensure the full enjoyment of rights and liberties within the nation.

As the HRDN-SL reaffirms its commitment to “Defending the Defender,” it remains steadfast in its mission to protect and promote human rights, with a specific focus on defending those who champion these rights amidst adversity.
