House of Pain Organization is a youth-led organization based in Kenema City, Sierra Leone with a motto ‘’Building Relationships where Unity Dominates’’. It is predominantly known for trading Ataya (traditional tea), assorted cold drinks, and food. The organization traces its roots back to the mid-1990s during the country’s civil war, when youths would gather to discuss their trials and tribulations. This gave rise to the name House of Pain, a place of comfort and refuge for youths in Kenema and beyond. Historically, the organization’s presence was most prominent around the Kenema City Plaza and the Bicycle Field Centre.
The House of Pain is not just an Ataya base, but also a space that fosters unity and dialogue among young people from different ethnicities, regions, religions, genders, and political affiliations. Through a shared cup of Ataya, members communicate in the universal language of “Unity.” The base serves as a blueprint for other Ataya hubs within Kenema, Sierra Leone, and the broader sub-region.
Moving from the traditional Ataya-bafa (informal tea spot) to a formal edifice is a deliberate effort to change public perception. Many outsiders previously viewed Ataya bases as spaces for idleness. This permanent structure demonstrates that these centers are, in fact, platforms for meaningful dialogue and community engagement. The House of Pain now hosts vibrant discussions on topics such as national and international politics, football, entertainment, and global affairs. It is also a safe space where youths can address issues affecting their families and communities.
In addition, HoP extended their heartfelt appreciation to the KTK-led Executive Committee, the Construction Committee, and all contributors whose dedication turned a long-held dream into reality the establishment of a permanent structure. Special thanks go to the Leader of Government Business, Hon. Mathew S. Nyuma, for his unwavering support. The general membership will not forget these contributions.
House of Pain climaxed the event with remembrance of fallen heroes including Chairman J.S. Kemokai (late), Coach Succoh Arun Conteh (late), Mr. Ayo Jones (late), Mr. Abdul Boys Sandi (late), my elder brother Karamokoh (late), Mustapha (late), and others whose names may have been unintentionally omitted. May the Almighty grant them eternal peace. Ameen.
