In a heartfelt and impactful submission during the recent parliamentary debate on the approval of presidential nominees, Hon. Umu Pyne, Member of Parliament representing Moyamba District in the Southern Region, advocated for the rights and welfare of women across Sierra Leone, particularly those in rural areas.

Speaking on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, in the Well of Parliament, Hon. Pyne emphasized that women who make up 52% of the country’s population—deserve more attention and support in national development. She passionately urged that more be done to improve the conditions of women, especially those who are unable to access city centers or essential services.

The soft-spoken yet result-oriented MP commended President Julius Maada Bio for his consistent efforts to prioritize women’s empowerment and inclusion in governance. She specifically applauded the appointment of Ms. Jenneh Jabati as Deputy Minister of Finance II, highlighting her 32 years of experience in the financial sector.

“I consider this appointment a strong commitment to the 30% quota for women, in line with the Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment (GEWE) Act passed by the Fifth Parliament,” Hon. Pyne stated.

She urged the Ministry of Finance, through the newly approved Deputy Minister, to decentralize financial institutions to ensure women across all constituencies, chiefdoms, and localities have access to loan schemes.

“Providing access to loans at the grassroots level will not only boost economic transformation but also improve the livelihoods of women,” she added.

Turning her attention to road safety, Hon. Pyne addressed the newly approved board member of the Sierra Leone Roads Authority (SLRA), urging them to prioritize roadworthiness and safety. She expressed concern over the increasing number of road accidents, many of which she said have left women languishing in hospitals across the country.

While acknowledging the role of bike and Kekeh riders in the transportation sector, she stressed the need for regulation, especially during weekends when accidents are most frequent. She pointed out the Bo-Kenema Highway, citing its poor condition and potholes as a major cause of deadly accidents.

“Women deserve protection in all aspects of life,” Hon. Pyne declared, calling on all newly approved appointees to work in the best interest of the nation, particularly in addressing issues that directly impact women.

Hon. Pyne also spoke on youth development, referencing the youngest nominee, Mr. Maada Lahai, appointed as Commissioner of the National Youth Commission. She expressed confidence in his leadership, urging him to focus on youth challenges especially the plight of young women, who remain particularly vulnerable in society.

“I have no doubt in Maada Lahai’s ability to lead and his commitment to transforming the lives of our youth, especially young women,” she noted.

In closing, Hon. Pyne called on fellow Members of Parliament across the political divide to support and swiftly approve all the nominees, describing them as qualified individuals with proven records of service and transformation.
