The Sierra Leone National Cycling Association (SLNCA) will kick starts its first ever SL Cycling Cup Series tomorrow, Friday November 24 2023 in the Freetown Municipality.
The SL Cycling Cup Series will be the first event to be organized by the executive of the National Cycling Association since they took up leadership around four months ago.
According to SLNCA’s Administrative Secretary Abdul Karim Kamara aka Stylish the SL Cycling Cup Series is the first of its kind in the African Region and is the first for the association to establish it as a sporting project which is meant to supports their athletes to have race every month.
He highlighted that the SL Cycling Cup Series will be going right across the country and that it will be hosted by many cities.
“We are going to start in Freetown wherein the opening ceremony will be on Friday 24th November and to be continued in Lunsar on the 26th November. It will also continue in Makeni, Kono, Kenema and Bo cities and from there we will have the grand final of the Cup Series,” Stylish stated.
He continued that all riders across the country will participate and the rider that will eventually emerge with the best point will likely take home a whooping Le 100, 000, 000 (NLe 100, 000).
“The race will be based on the individual rider because it will go on point for each time the rider race, it will accumulate a point and the points will be graded for each position ranging from first, second third onto 10th so the best rider with the highest point will emerge the best rider of the cup series.”
Kamara further revealed that they will be having riders from different categories including the Elite, female and junior, with different prizes available for all these categories and that winners in every race will receive prizes, and also they will have the grand final of the series in each category.
He urged the cyclists to keep training because this is a big opportunity for them, stating that thing like this had never happen before in this country and they should be proud as Sierra Leoneans because there is no Cycling Cup Series in the entire Continent.
“Sierra Leone will be the first country in the Region to establish the Cycling Cup Series so it’s a great opportunity that will give our riders the chance to ride every month.”
“As an association, our aim is to build the sport in our Country so that the outside world will aware that there is cycling in Sierra Leone and we too can ride in our country and other people out there will come and ride in our country,” the SLNCA Admin Secretary noted.
Stylish also disclosed that the race in Freetown is sponsored by Tacagoma of which they are partnering with them to celebrate the National Chimpanzee week. The Lunsar’s race is sponsored by LeCol, a UK apparel company and also the Makeni’s race it’s sponsored by Rapha, a UK apparel company as well, and the rest is sponsored by the Ministry of Sports, the National Sports Authority (NSA) and the National Olympic Committee (NOC).
He called on all Sierra Leoneans, business houses, philanthropist and the individual to continue to support the Cycling Association as they continue to work with them in a more delightful way.
