Health Minister Urges Global Commitment to Vaccination

In a powerful address at a Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance event, Sierra Leone’s Minister of Health, Dr. Austin Demby, shared his personal experience with polio during childhood, emphasizing the life-saving power of vaccines in preventing debilitating diseases.

Dr. Demby described vaccines as an “invisible shield” against pain, disability, and loss, underscoring their vital role in global public health.

Calling for renewed global commitment, Dr. Demby advocated for intensified vaccination efforts with the goal of protecting 500 million additional children by 2030. He acknowledged progress in the fight against polio and other preventable diseases but warned that the mission is far from complete.

Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance credited with helping to vaccinate half of the world’s children continues to champion equitable access to vaccines as a pathway to a healthier future for all.
