The Managing Director of the Guma Valley Water Company, Mariwan Kallon, has announced a series of measures aimed at improving water supply and distribution across Freetown and surrounding areas.

Speaking at the government’s weekly press conference organized by the Ministry of Information and Civic Education at the Miatta Conference Centre, Kallon disclosed that the company has installed 366 units of 10,000-litre water tanks in various communities. This initiative is intended to improve access to water and reduce reliance on the pipeline network.

He explained that the installation of these tanks will help minimize water losses caused by leakages and ensure that more communities especially those with inconsistent supply have access to stored water.

Kallon also highlighted intensified efforts to curb illegal water connections. He noted that the company is working closely with law enforcement agencies to clamp down on offenders. In addition, meters are being installed on all hydrants to monitor usage and reduce wastage.

To promote fair distribution, the Managing Director announced the introduction of a water rationing system across Freetown. Under this arrangement, the city has been divided into six zones, with each zone scheduled to receive water for approximately eight hours per day.

He stated that the rationing plan is designed to ensure equitable access to limited water resources, particularly during periods of high demand.

Kallon, however, expressed concern over ongoing encroachment on the Guma Catchment Area, warning that such activities pose a serious threat to the sustainability of the water supply. While commending government efforts to protect the catchment, he emphasized the need for continued public cooperation.

He reaffirmed the company’s commitment to improving service delivery and urged residents to support ongoing reforms by avoiding illegal connections and using water responsibly.
