A delegation, led by Prime Minister Bernard Goumou of the Republic of Guinea, paid a courtesy call on President Dr. Julius Maada Bio to convey felicitations and a message of solidarity from President Col. Mamady Doumbouya, the government, and people of Guinea.
The visit, which included government ministers and technical staff, aimed to express gratitude to President Bio and his government for their prompt response after the December 18, 2023, explosion at an oil depot in Conakry. The incident resulted in fatalities, injuries to over 500 individuals, a humanitarian crisis, and fuel shortages across Guinea.
Following the explosion, Sierra Leone swiftly dispatched a high-level delegation, led by Vice President Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh, along with government ministers, heads of the National Disaster Management Agency, Petroleum Regulatory Agency, and a team of medical personnel. They provided assistance and delivered a special message of solidarity from President Dr. Julius Maada Bio.
Almost three weeks later, the Guinean delegation visited Freetown to express gratitude, decorate, and honor the fifteen-member Sierra Leonean team that had assisted in Conakry. Prime Minister Goumou commended President Bio and his government for their rapid intervention during the crisis and conveyed President Mamady Doumbouya’s profound appreciation.
Prime Minister Goumou informed President Bio that the Sierra Leonean medical team and disaster management agency had effectively treated and provided services for the injured and displaced individuals in Guinea.
President Bio expressed gratitude for the visit and emphasized his commitment to strengthening the bilateral relationship between Sierra Leone and Guinea. He acknowledged the enduring neighborliness between the two countries over the decades and hoped for continued collaboration. President Bio highlighted the potential for a sustainable architecture that would allow Guinea to source petroleum products from Sierra Leone, fostering opportunities in trade, health, and energy sectors.
