In a major public health intervention, Government of Sierra Leone through the Ministry of Health has received 61,300 doses of the Mpox vaccine, reinforcing the country’s fight against the virus and its commitment to safeguarding citizens.
The vaccines, which arrived on February 25, 2025, mark a critical milestone in Sierra Leone’s proactive efforts to curb the spread of Mpox. This initiative is spearheaded by the Government of Sierra Leone (GoSL) in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, under the leadership of Minister Austin Demby. The country now joins several African nations that have successfully secured access to these essential vaccines.
Health officials have announced that vaccine distribution will commence immediately, with priority given to high-risk communities. Resources are being mobilised to ensure swift and efficient rollout, reinforcing the government’s commitment to disease prevention and public health protection.
The Mpox virus has raised growing concerns across various regions, making vaccination a crucial defense mechanism. By securing these vaccines, Sierra Leone is taking decisive steps to prevent future outbreaks, enhance healthcare preparedness, and contribute to broader regional health security.
Authorities emphasise that the vaccination campaign will be closely monitored to ensure effective implementation. The goal is to achieve herd immunity, minimise the risk of transmission, and strengthen the nation’s resilience against infectious diseases.
With this initiative, Sierra Leone demonstrates its dedication to prioritising public health, protecting vulnerable populations, and combating the threat of Mpox through strategic and timely interventions.
