The delegation highlighted the country’s strategic vision for achieving a clean, reliable, and sustainable energy future, aligned with global commitments to combat climate change.

In his remarks, Hon. Dr. Kandeh K. Yumkella emphasized the importance of energy security and renewable solutions for Sierra Leone’s economic growth and development. “Our Energy Transition Plan is rooted in harnessing the vast potential of renewable energy sources, such as solar, wind, and hydropower, while fostering innovation and investment in green technologies,” he stated. The plan also aligns with Sierra Leone’s medium and long-term national development strategies to meet energy demands while preserving environmental integrity.

The presentation underscored key initiatives aimed at expanding access to clean energy for rural and urban populations. These include investments in off-grid solar solutions, modernizing the national grid, and fostering partnerships for sustainable energy projects. Hon. Dr. Kandeh K. Yumkella noted that these efforts not only address energy deficits but also create opportunities for job creation, entrepreneurship, and economic diversification.

Sierra Leone’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions was another focal point. The delegation highlighted policies promoting energy efficiency, environmental protection, and climate adaptation to mitigate the impacts of global warming. “We are resolute in our ambition to support the global green agenda while prioritizing the needs of our people and safeguarding our natural resources,” Dr. Kandeh asserted.

The IRENA General Assembly serves as a key platform for member states to collaborate on renewable energy initiatives and share best practices for sustainable development. Sierra Leone’s active participation reaffirms its dedication to becoming a regional leader in clean energy and contributing to a more sustainable future for all.
