Government of Sierra Leone, through the Ministries of Finance and Energy, along with the Electricity Distribution and Supply Authority (EDSA), signed a one-year extension of its power generation agreement with Karpowership.

The extended contract ensures the continued supply of 45 megawatts (MW) of electricity during the dry season and 25 MW during the rainy season an essential measure to meet the country’s ongoing energy demands.

The original five-year contract with Karpowership officially expired on the same day, prompting the need for an immediate renewal to maintain uninterrupted electricity across the nation. The new agreement includes minor revisions to the original terms, reflecting efforts to improve and optimize Sierra Leone’s energy supply framework.

A spokesperson for Karpowership praised the government’s proactive decision and reaffirmed the company’s commitment to delivering stable power. “We are committed to ensuring that the people of Sierra Leone receive consistent and reliable energy, which is essential for economic growth and daily life,” the spokesperson stated.

The contract extension has been widely welcomed by citizens and stakeholders alike, as many see it as a vital step toward restoring normalcy in electricity supply. Sierra Leone has long struggled with frequent power outages, which have disrupted businesses, healthcare, education, and household life. This new agreement is expected to significantly improve energy availability, particularly during periods of peak demand.

The Ministry of Energy emphasized that the renewed partnership with Karpowership supports the government’s broader energy strategy, which aims to expand access, improve reliability, and reduce costs across the sector. In a joint press release, officials expressed appreciation to Karpowership for its continued cooperation and recognized the private sector’s essential role in achieving national energy objectives.

As Sierra Leone continues to tackle its long-standing energy challenges, the extension of the Karpowership contract represents a strategic and forward-thinking move to ensure that citizens have access to the electricity they need.

Ultimately, the government’s renewed focus on strengthening the energy sector is viewed as a key driver of economic development and improved quality of life for all Sierra Leoneans.
