The Sierra Leone Roads Authority (SLRA) on Tuesday, February 14, 2023 signed an agreement with the China Gansu International Economic and Technical Cooperation (SL) Ltd. (CGICO) for the construction of Malakika-Gbomgboma Road (620metres) in Bonthe Island, Southern Sierra Leone.

The contract was signed at the SLRA headquarters in Freetown by the Director General of SLRA, Ing. Amara Jambai Kanneh, on behalf of the Government of Sierra Leone and the General Manager of CGICO, Mr Shubin Qiao, in the presence of the Member of Parliament for Constituency 089, Honourable Sengepoh Thomas and a cross-section of the Board and Management of SLRA.

Speaking before the signing of contract, Ing. Amara Jambai Kanneh said the SLRA has gone through the procurement processes, and was pleased with the bid submitted by CGICO. “We at the SLRA are to ensure that the project is implemented according to the stipulated time and cost,” he noted.

The General Manager of CGICO, Mr Shubin Qiao expressed his delight for gaining the first road construction contract in Sierra Leone and committed to work within the contract specification.

the Member of Parliament for Constituency 089, Honourable Sengepoh Thomas thanked SLRA for coordinating the processes leading to the award of the contract.

“The construction of that road is historic in Bonthe Island because one government after the other promised to construct it but they did not,” he said

The Malakika – Gbogboma Road is the main route that connects the Bonthe Municipality to the interior of the Island, but it is not accessible by motorists because a substantial section of it is below sea level.

The contract requires  CGIETC to design and build the road with soft foundation and multiple porous box culverts. The project is to be completed in 24 months.
