Sierra Leone’s Foreign Minister, Tim Kabba, has publicly addressed recent allegations regarding a purported visa ban imposed by the U.S. government on Sierra Leone.

The claims, which originated from a publication believed to be from The New York Times, have raised significant concern among Sierra Leoneans both at home and abroad.

In his response, Minister Kabba described the report as “inaccurate,” emphasising that he would refrain from labelling it as “fake.” He explained that the situation arises from the misuse of tourist visas by some Sierra Leoneans.

Kabba noted that a number of individuals have abused their visa status by overstaying and engaging in unauthorised economic activities while in the United States.

He stressed the importance of adhering to visa regulations, stating that such abuses not only jeopardise individual travellers but also tarnish the reputation of Sierra Leone as a whole. “This behaviour undermines the integrity of our visa agreements and has led to misunderstandings,” he remarked.

The Foreign Minister called for a careful examination of the facts surrounding the issue and advocated for a constructive dialogue between Sierra Leone and the U.S. to address any concerns related to visa compliance. He reassured citizens that the Sierra Leonean government is committed to upholding the terms of its agreements with the U.S. and ensuring that its citizens adhere to these regulations while traveling abroad.

As international travel and relations come under increasing scrutiny, Kabba’s comments aim to clarify the situation and mitigate any potential fallout from the visa ban claims.

By addressing the issue head-on, Kabba seeks to restore confidence among Sierra Leoneans regarding their ability to travel to the United States without facing undue restrictions.
