The election for the Paramount Chief of the Perri Chiefdom in the Pujehun District of Sierra Leone has been postponed following complaints about the electoral process in a press release dated Wednesday, September 25th, 2024.
The postponement, announced by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Local Government and Community Affairs, Thomas B. Lansana, will delay the election, originally scheduled for October 2nd, until further notice.
The decision follows a meeting between the Ministry and the Electoral Commission of Sierra Leone (ECSL) on September 19th.
This meeting was convened in response to complaints lodged with the Ministry concerning the conduct of the election process leading up to the declaration of rights for aspirants.
Furthermore, a key point of contention centered around the Provincial Secretary’s involvement in the process, specifically their proposal to hold a referendum to determine the chieftaincy. This proposal was deemed unjustifiable and subsequently rejected.
Mr. Lansana’s official letter, released on September 24th, states that the postponement is necessary for further engagement and addressing the raised concerns. The letter emphasizes the Ministry’s commitment to ensuring a fair and transparent election process.
All parties involved have been informed of the postponement, and a new election date will be announced following further discussions and investigations into the irregularities.
The decision to postpone the election highlights the complexities and sensitivities surrounding traditional leadership elections in Sierra Leone.
Often deeply rooted in customary practices, the process can be susceptible to disputes and challenges.
The government’s intervention underscores its commitment to upholding fairness and resolving conflicts through dialogue.
In addendum, the Ministry is expected to release further details regarding the investigation and the rescheduled election date in the coming days.
