The Parliamentary Oversight Committee on Fisheries and Marine Resources chaired by Hon. Neneh Labbie has on Wednesday this week visited the Back Johnson community wherein the government is planning to invest massively in the fish harbor through support from the Chinese government.
The on the sport visitation by the Committee is to ascertained and verified the much talk about the Back Johnson fish harbor project, the Committee was comprised of both sides of the political divide , officials from the Ministry of Lands, officials from the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources and staff of Parliament.
Hon. Neneh Lebbie Chairperson of the Fisheries Committee said the project is a welcoming news, taking into consideration the revenue mobilization government would derived from the investment, she said the dimension of the land shown to the MP’s is is an ideal site for the project.” when u have a fish harbor you control the fish market and employment facility would be a most; .we are losing a lot of resources as government and the investment is a welcoming idea”. Hon. Labbie asserted.
Hon. Paul Saa Sam representing C4C, said it will be a huge capital project; adding that it would be an economic benefit for the government and job creation for youth.
Hon. Ahamed Samba Turay representing the main opposition party in Parliament APC said the harbor investment is a positive initiative from the government; adding that no harm would be done in the green scenery of the ecosystem.
Alhaji Mohamed Rabieu, a surveyor in charge of the project from the Ministry of Lands said 252 arcs of Lands would be used for the investment; adding all demarcation has being done, and those that would be affected by the project would be considered and compensated.
Deputy Secretary Il, in the Ministry of Marine Resources, who is the focal person of the project Mr. Mohamed Jalloh said the $55 million projects is a grant from the People Republic of China to invest into the fish harbor at black Johnson community, adding that black johnson was chosen because of its location and geographical feature of the project. He said the government and the people of Sierra Leone stand to benefits hugely and called on Sierra Leoneans to embraced the project. In conclusion, committee members were very impressed with the initiatives taken by the government to invest in the community taken into consideration the amount of revenue and knowledge transferred government and the would-be deriving from the massive investment
