The Government of Sierra Leone, through the Ministry of Energy, is pleased to inform the public that a vessel carrying the first turbine and generator for the Nant Power Project has arrived in Freetown.

This development reflects the Government’s commitment to providing reliable, affordable, and accessible electricity for citizens, and further demonstrates His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio’s strategic vision for the energy sector.

It may be recalled that the Nant Power Project, which reached financial close in November 2024, secured USD 292 million in debt financing from the United States International Development Finance Corporation and USD 40 million from the ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development, while TCQ Power and Anergi Group contributed USD 85 million in equity. The project is set to deliver Sierra Leone’s first large-scale independent power plant.

The Ministry notes that the facility, which can run on both gas and fuel, will be the first of its kind in the Mano River Union.

According to Abu Kamara, General Manager of the Nant Power Project, “When complete, the 108.4MW plant currently under construction at Kissy Terminal in Freetown will nearly double Sierra Leone’s electricity generation capacity. It will supply reliable baseload power under a 22-year Power Purchase Agreement with the Government of Sierra Leone and EDSA.”

First power from the facility is expected in the third quarter of 2027.

The Ministry of Energy reiterates its commitment to pursuing and achieving the Government’s overall policy objectives in the energy sector.
