First Lady Reassures Commitment to Combat Gender-Based Violence

Marking the second anniversary of the UN World Day for the Prevention of and Healing from Child Sexual Exploitation, Abuse, and Violence, Her Excellency Mrs Fatima Bio reaffirmed her commitment to combating gender-based violence.

The event at the State House underscored the urgent need for action against these pervasive issues affecting women and children.

Her Excellency Mrs. Fatima Bio, First Lady of Sierra Leone, addressed a gathering of local organizations, international partners, and advocates, emphasizing the importance of creating a safe environment for all citizens. “This day is not just a celebration; it is a clarion call for action,” she declared, urging victims to speak out against the ills of sexual exploitation and violence.

Mrs. Bio expressed her profound gratitude to her husband, His Excellency Dr. Julius Maada Bio, for his steadfast support in championing the rights of Sierra Leonean women and girls. “His unwavering commitment has provided me with a vital platform to advocate for these critical issues,” she noted.

The observance featured testimonials from survivors and discussions regarding the collaborative efforts needed to address the challenges of gender-based violence in the country.

Local organizations highlighted their ongoing initiatives to empower women and promote awareness of these issues, while international bodies reiterated their commitment to supporting Sierra Leone’s efforts to create a safer society.
